Joining a New HOOPP Employer
One of the great things about having a HOOPP pension is that you can potentially carry your pension with you from one employer to another.
Few people today stay at one employer for their entire career – but because HOOPP is a multi-employer plan with over 370 healthcare employers participating across Ontario, you can take your pension with you when you move from one HOOPP employer to another.
Changing Jobs:
When you leave your job, you have a few options.
If you’re leaving your job to work at another HOOPP employer, you can choose “Joining a new HOOPP employer” as your termination option.
By selecting this option, you can link the periods of HOOPP membership that you earned at your previous HOOPP employer with the service that you will earn at your new job.
If you don’t immediately have a new job at another HOOPP employer waiting or have other plans for the near future, you can leave your benefits in HOOPP and become a deferred member.
If you choose this option but do not find employment with a new HOOPP employer, you can request your Plan termination options at any time. It is important to contact HOOPP as soon as possible, as your age and other variables may affect your options.
Your HOOPP Membership:
By linking your periods of HOOPP membership, you will optimize your contributory service and minimize any early retirement reductions to your pension if you retire before age 60.
It is important to note that during the time you are not employed at a HOOPP employer and not a member of HOOPP, you will build no further benefits in the Plan.
If you are moving to a part-time job, your employer may have hours and earnings requirements that must be met. Please check with your Human Resources department to review your eligibility for membership in the Plan.
