With her daughters now ages 12 and 16 and becoming more independent, Zenaida decided it was time to get back to her goal. In January 2018 she enrolled in a family nurse practitioner master’s program. She expects to complete her degree in 2021.

Going back to school while working has its challenges. “Any time I have, once I spend quality time with my family, I basically spend it studying,” she said. But she’s sure the effort will be worth it. As a family nurse practitioner, Zenaida will be able to work with patients throughout their lives, diagnosing and treating illness, conducting exams, and prescribing medication. “I will be able to take a more holistic approach to patient care,” she said.

Zenaida’s advice is to reach for your dreams, no matter what. “There’s never a right time to go back to school,” she said. “If you have the passion, follow your heart and fulfill that goal.”
