Caregivers: Canada’s unsung heroes
Taking care of the ones we love
Did you know that nearly 50% of Canadians have provided care to a family member or friend at some point during their lives? Caregivers are typically family members, friends or neighbours who provide personal, social and psychological support to someone in need. You may be a caregiver and don’t even know it.
If you’re providing a loved one with personal care such as bathing, assistance with eating, dressing and mobility, then you’re one of Canada’s unsung heroes who have taken on the role of caring for a loved one or friend in need of support.
Taking a break
Caregiving can be personally rewarding. But it can also be stressful and can impact your health and wellness. If you are a caregiver, there are things you can do to help create a balance in your life, such as accepting help, staying healthy, and reaching out to professional services that are available in your community.
There are a variety of organizations that offer self-care resources for caregivers such as:
Respite care can provide a period of relief for caregivers, especially for those who are caring for a loved one 24/7. Respite gives the caregiver an opportunity to get to things that have been put on hold, such as dealing with personal matters, going on a vacation or just carving out some time to recharge.
Support groups can offer regular encouragement, support and ideas from other caregivers who may be dealing with similar situations. Support groups can also offer information about local resources available to help and may open the opportunity for new friendships.
Formal training can help caregivers better understand the extent of their loved one’s illness or condition. Some training programs offer support and practical assistance to help caregivers understand and assist with specific medical conditions, such as Alzheimers.
Where to get help
If you’re a caregiver, it’s important to take advantage of the resources available that can help you provide care for your loved ones and for you.
