As the pension plan for Ontario's nurses and healthcare workers, HOOPP is proud to provide our 478,000 members – a majority of whom are nursing professionals – with a secure and predictable retirement future. Our members work tirelessly to support their communities, so it is only fair that we continue to provide them with the pension peace of mind that they deserve.
Coinciding with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, widely known as the founder of modern nursing, Nursing Week is an opportunity to celebrate and honor the crucial role that nurses play in the healthcare system. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting healthcare crisis. It's more important than ever to stop and reflect on the tremendous sacrifices our members have made, and continue to make, as they work to selflessly serve those in need of their care.
At some point in our lives, each of us is touched by the healthcare system – whether during times of crisis or moments of joy. Throughout these experiences, nurses and healthcare professionals play a vital role, providing care and support. Their contributions leave a lasting impact on those they interact with.
Behind every patient’s journey are countless stories of compassion, resilience and dedication told through the lens of nurses. These stories not only highlight the extraordinary commitment of those in the profession but also inspire others – patients, families and healthcare workers alike. They remind us that nursing is not just a career, but a calling driven by diverse experiences and purpose.

Hear from our members:
“Having lost a parent at a very young age, I spent a lot of time visiting my mother in hospital. With each visit I quickly noticed that the nurses not only cared for my mother, but they cared about me — always asking about my tests and
basketball games. The care and compassion nurses showed, not only to my mother but for me, had a huge impact on me wanting to become a nurse. That was over 40 years ago! Today I have the proud honour of advocating for 8,000 nurses and still practice.”
Sandi Jones R.P.N., Nursing Division President, SEIU Healthcare Canada
“As a frontline RN, I see the growing pressures health care providers face across various clinical settings, especially in high-acuity and procedural care environments. HOOPP is not just a retirement plan; it is a vital part of how health care
workers feel supported while doing this difficult and essential work. HOOPP, ONA, and frontline care are all interlinked — part of one story of respect and accomplishment.”
Serge Ganzburg, R.N., Coordinator, ONA Local 80
