Thinking about a new job? Think about retirement, too.
Meet HOOPP member Alfred Lam
When Alfred Lam first joined HOOPP in 2005, he was thinking about his career, not his retirement. At the time, he was 25 and starting work as a radiation therapist at the London Regional Cancer Program.
In 2008, Alfred changed jobs, moving to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. He was glad to know that he could keep his pension with HOOPP and continue to build it. A year later, when Alfred was offered a position as a professor of radiation therapy at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, he knew what he had to consider before accepting the job.
"Before I came to Michener, I checked to make sure it was a HOOPP employer so I could keep growing my pension,” Alfred said.
And that’s the advice he gives to fellow HOOPP members. “Everyone says that you need to live in the moment. What I’ve learned is that you also need to think about yourself in 20 years,” Alfred says. “When looking for employment, try your best to find an employer that also offers HOOPP to ensure you can continue to build your pension.”
Now 38, he’s been thinking more about what his retirement will eventually look like. “As a member of the HOOPP Plan, I really feel secure for my future. I know that I am very lucky, as few individuals in the workforce have such a strong pension program.”
Thinking about changing jobs? You can continue to build your pension at more than 570 HOOPP employers. Find out which hospitals and healthcare organizations offer the Plan.
