Step in the right direction
Learn how you can stay fit and healthy in retirement
During retirement you may want to spend your days relaxing and indulging a little more than during your working years. While that’s important, it’s also necessary to focus on your overall wellness. That’s where regular exercise, a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle all come into play.
How does regular exercise benefit you?
Regular exercise has physical benefits – and it’s good for your mental health. Activities such as walking, yoga, and swimming can help keep your mind sharp as you get older. Many studies show that these exercises can boost your mood, improve memory and ease depression and anxiety.
Striking the right balance
Even if you’re just getting started, there are many different ways to exercise. You can start slowly while you figure out what works best for you and then build up your routine. And consider switching it up from time to time to challenge yourself and try something new. There are four main types of exercise you should consider as part of your routine:
- Endurance or aerobic activities increase your breathing and heart rate. Jogging, dancing, swimming or even going for a brisk walk are just a few examples.
- Strength exercises help make your muscles stronger. Lifting weights or using a resistance band can build strength.
- Balance exercises such as yoga can help prevent falls.
- Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help your body stay limber.
It’s never too late
Be sure to give your body and mind the attention they deserve. Balance and moderation are key to a fit and healthy retirement. Start by doing something small every day and soon it will be part of your regular routine.
Before you start any exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor to ensure your routine is right for you.
